Talking White

Ralph Nader was already looking like a pretty marginal character in this year's presidential election, and his latest comments should only marginalize him further:
"There's only one thing different about Barack Obama when it comes to being a Democratic presidential candidate. He's half African-American," Nader said. "Whether that will make any difference, I don't know. I haven't heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We'll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards."
[Emphasis added.]

Are we at the point yet where the harm Nader has done to our country outweighs the good he has done (i.e.: seatbelts)? Probably not. But still...

This is a stretch, and I never studied logic, but I think if you took the number of people saved from death in car wrecks after Unsafe at Any Speed, and compared it to the number killed by Bush era policies, you might get a rough estimate of whether Nader is going to heaven or hell.

Is it that simple a calculation? So, if Joe Stalin, in his final days, had invented dwarf wheat, saving the lives of a billion starving people in India and Bangladesh, he'd be in Heaven now?

Actually, I guess that's fair.

Well, it´s a conservative argument for the Defense Budget. "Every Dollar spent on defense research gets multiplied in technology transfer to civilian use..." Like, if we didn´t spend a billion bucks figuring out how to kill people, we wouldn´t be able to cure cancer. The fact that this is apparently provable is yet another reason I didn´t study philosophy.

Isn't this just the same as the cuckoo clock monologue from The Third Man?
